Samuel Burke joined chambers upon completion of pupillage, under the supervision of Michael Hayton.

 

His broad common-law practice encompasses civil, criminal, and regulatory work.

 

Sam’s civil work includes personal injury and credit hire claims, acting for both Claimant and Defendant in small-claims and fast-track trials.  He has given seminars for trainee solicitors on civil advocacy.  Additionally, Sam receives instruction to draft pleadings and advise in a variety of civil matters.

 

His criminal practice comprises Crown Court trials, appeals, and Magistrates trials concerning a range of offences including fraud, sexual offences, violence, road traffic.  Sam was recently appointed as Crown Counsel to the Falkland Island Government, appearing for the Prosecution in a variety of serious offences.  However, his criminal practice principally consists of Defence work.

 

In regulatory matters, Sam acts for various regulatory agencies.  He is frequently instructed to represent Defendants in proceedings concerning environmental and farming regulations.  He has given several lectures on Inquests, and was closely involved in the Parliamentary stages of the Coroner’s and Justice Act 2009.

 

Before coming to the Bar, Sam worked in Parliament for several years, as well as a period in the American Senate.  His work included legislative drafting, speech-writing and research.  He brings with him significant knowledge of the legislative process.
