Mark Savill returns to practice following Public Inquiry
After five years instructed by the Treasury Solicitor as junior counsel to a public inquiry investigating the circumstances surrounding the murder of the prominent Northern Irish solicitor Rosemary Nelson (http://www.rosemarynelsoninquiry.org/) Mark Savill is to return to practice in chambers on March 1st. He will be available in February for consultations.
His time on the Inquiry has added to his existing skills in managing very large and sensitive cases. He was called in 1993 and prior to his departure had a flourishing practice in crime, with an emphasis on health, safety and regulatory matters. He is a category 4 prosecutor, and has prosecuted for a variety of government departments as a member of the Attorney General's Panel. He sits as a part time judge in the First Tier Tribunal (Health Education and Social Care) (Mental Health). He has consistently been rated by legal directories and was most recently described in Chambers and Partners 2010 as 'a very smooth performer.'
His work on the Inquiry has taken him to London, Belfast and Armagh, investigating allegations of state collusion into Rosemary Nelson's death and the standard to which the investigation of her murder was conducted. He has had access to massive quantities of information, much of it classified and has been security vetted to the highest level to facilitate this. He has been involved in questioning witnesses from a variety of backgrounds, including politicians, senior detectives, non-governmental organisations, Special Branch officers, security service and army personnel, as well as alleged terrorists. He also worked closely with a team of retired detectives who reviewed the largest single murder investigtion in Northern Ireland's history.
